Wood toys FAQs
I’m buying a present for my niece’s
first birthday. Any ideas?
An educational toy is always a good present for a young child. A one-year-old
will likely like any gift he or she receives. Therefore the question
should really be: “What is the most appropriate gift to give?”
Because young children tend to stick things in their mouths that they
shouldn’t, it is never good to give a young child a toy that could
cut or scratch her mouth or face. Likewise, toys that are not made in
the United States do not always meet the same safety requirements that
toys made in the United States do. Therefore, it is sometimes risky
to buy toys manufactured in foreign countries.
All my kids ever want to do is play video games. What can I
do to change this?
Aside from taking away the video games, the best thing a parent can
do to peel his or her child away from the video game controller is to
buy cool toys that can be played outdoors. Swing sets are always favorites
among children. Other items like pitching machines, basketball hoops,
soccer goals, swimming pools, tetherball poles, etc. are all effective
at pulling children away from the home and into the backyard. The more
a child plays outside, the more he wants to stay out there.
Why would buying wooden toys be a good idea for children?
Granted, wooden toys do not typically make noises and they do not typically
flash or have lights on them. Still, children are prone to like wooden
toys because they are time-tested favorites. Wooden toys are usually
most effective at allowing children to use their own minds and their
own imaginations as they play with toys. Toys that include too many
bright lights and loud noises rob a child of being able to use his imagination
as much as he might like.
